Amidst a lot of critical reviews about the evaluation system, I feel it is still a very reassuring practice to let the taxpayers know that the system cares for the quality of the practicing internists. When was the last time, we, IT professionals took such a professional re-certification? We do have internal exams/certifications that our organizations mandate to pass to get our promotions/hikes, but none of them stop us from practicing the work that we are doing.
Is such a re-certification required for our profession, when most of the problems we encounter are answered by Google anyways? Should we need a authority which puts rigorous control on the quality of professionals coding/designing/managing? Should our identity for quality be a certificate and not a resume?
I'm really not sure if we need such a certification for our profession. But I'm trying to imagine the outcome if such an evaluation system was enforced. Really scary.
ReplyDeleteThoughts much appreciated
ReplyDeleteBoth the professions - IT and Medicine are mutually exclusive.
ReplyDeleteDoctors improve quality of life and extend life time by stopping the inevitable fate we all face - death. Hence it’s essential for a physician to maintain certification by actively keeping pace with advancements in his/her specialty for high quality patient care. Yes, they shouldn't be allowed to practice medicine until they pass. Not all countries practice this kind of evaluation; in fact India doesn't follow such a rigorous testing mechanism before they become doctors.
If such a system emerges in IT, if we are stopped from work and have been asked to pass first then continue working. Just imagine what happens.....? We need to hire a new person, again start with the complicated knowledge transfer done half baked, one has to share others work. All these stop the growth of productivity. Instead, we must need rigorous control on hiring the efficient candidate with all the potentials skills. Nowadays, organizations fail to select the right person for the right job.
The IT industries undergo changes quite frequently. Implementing this system will be a failure in IT. Such a system should be soon enforced first in Indian medical sciences.
Since its a life and death matter ,such stringent evaluation is required for doctors.
ReplyDeleteI feel this cannot be compared with certifications offered in IT industry. If an IT professional fails in doing his work he can go back ,learn ,update and execute his tasks well. But we do not want doctors to commit mistakes .
Evalution based on certification for IT pro, will vary based on the individual.Certain group of people fair really well with certifications and can provide better answers or innovative ideas than google posts. So i feel certification need not be mandated but it can kept as one of the criteria to climb up the ladder faster.
